In AP Spanish Literature and Culture, you have the chance to explore these writers works in their native tongue. Also, the course is great for students planning to major in Spanish in college. Today I’ll take you step by step through the AP Exam so that there are no surprises on exam day. Let’s get started! Note: This article accounts for all revisions made to the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam in Fall 2014. If researching test materials online, please only refer to those that appeared on the Spring 2015 exam or later. How You’re Assessed on the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam You do not have to be 100% fluent to make a 5 on the AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam. According to the College Board, the company that makes the exam, a student should have completed three or more years of Spanish before taking AP Spanish Literature and Culture. Unless youre a native speaker, Id recommend this course only for high school seniors who began learning Spanish their freshman year (or sooner). In the end, though, its your call. Finally, the College Board strongly recommends that you take a Spanish language course the same year you take AP Spanish Literature and Culture. Like many college-level literature courses, AP Spanish Literature and Culture is focused on six broad learning objectives: Societies in Contact The Construction of Gender Time and Space Literary Creation Interpersonal Relations The Dual Nature of Being If I had to guess what your teacher is planning, you can expect that each of these learning objectives will make up an individual unit. Of course, since the course is focused on literature, expect many literary pieces to hit on multiple themes. The course also has five guiding questions. Successful Time Management The AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam is three hours long, the same length as the majority of AP exams. As youll soon see, every minute presents a different challenge. Section I: Multiple Choice (65 Questions, 80 Minutes, 50% of Exam Score) Section I is further broken down into two sections: Part A and Part B. Part A: 15 Questions, 25 minutes Interpretive Listening: Audio Texts Part B: 50 Questions, 55 minutes Reading Analysis: Print Texts In Part A, you must listen to listen to an author interview, a recited poem (not from the reading list), and a literary presentation. Only the poem is read twice before you begin answering questions. When you move on to part B, try to keep yourself to one minute per question. If you can do this (make sure to improve time management skills through practice tests), you’ll have a comfortable cushion to check your answers, or finish the test if some questions take longer than you expect. No matter what, all questions should have answers when time is up. Why? There is no penalty for guessing. Break (10 Minutes) Break is an important time during any AP Exam. Go to the bathroom, drink some water, and eat something. Even though you’re taking a test in Spanish, you don’t have enough time to go out for tapas. 🙂 Section II: Free Response (4 tasks, 100 Minutes, 50% of Exam Score) Section II also has a Part A and Part B. Here is the breakdown of Section II: Part A: Short Answer Questions Text Explanation Text and Art Comparison Part B: Essay Questions Analysis of a Single Text Text Comparison It is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED that you spend 15 minutes a piece working on the short answer questions, and spend 35 minutes a piece working on the essay questions. This advice comes direct from the College Board, so when youre practicing Section II, these are the time limits to shoot for. Test Content: Section I Though only two years have passed since AP Spanish Literature and Culture underwent a major revision, there are still plenty of valid online resources to help you prepare for test day. You will likely see old (but still relevant) exam questions on your tests throughout the year.  I wouldn’t be surprised if every one of your unit tests was a shorter version of the AP Exam. Also, since the exam guide has a Required Reading List, you have the advantage of knowing which texts may appear on the exam. My Recommendation: print out the list along with the texts. In the months leading up to exam day, read/review a little bit each night in addition to your standard study routine. Test Content: Section II Section II is a little bit of everything, so here is the breakdown of what each task will ask you to do. These are only summaries of the requirements, but they should give you a good preview of what to expect on exam day. Short Answer Note: For both short answer questions, the texts will come directly from the Required Reading List. Text Explanation: Identify the author and period in which the text was written. Explain how the theme from the excerpt reflects the theme in the complete text. Text and Art Comparison: Compare the theme of a text with that of a piece of artwork. Besides comparing the theme of the two works, you are also required to compare the genre and period of both pieces. Essay Questions Analysis of a Single Text: The text will come from the Required Reading List. If it is fiction or nonfiction, expect to read a short excerpt on the AP Exam. If this question uses a poem, expect to read the entire poem. In your essay, you are expected to analyze how the text represents the genre and time period. In doing this, you must analyze the role of literary devices present in the text. Text Comparison: As the name suggests, you are required to compare two texts. Big Note: One of the texts does not come from the Required Reading List. In your essay, you must analyze the shared theme(s) and literary devices. And of course, you must present examples from both texts. The End The AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam is a course taken almost exclusively by 12th-grade students. As with all AP exams The College Board will release AP Spanish Literature and Culture scores in early July. Yep, one day in the middle of summer you’ll receive an email saying that your scores are ready on your College Board account. For those of you who earn a 4 or 5, congratulations. Come freshman year, youll have earned college credit and you can jump right into a second year (or second semester, depending on the generosity of your future college) Spanish literature course. If you earn a 3 or less, don’t fret. Many colleges offer placement tests for matriculating students, and are sometimes flexible concerning course requests. From the prologue, â€Å"two star-crossed lovers,† it can be concluded that there will be two lovers in the story, presumably, Romeo and Juliet. Additionally, the prologue also states, â€Å"Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean† (Prologue). This quote is direct foreshadowing, telling us the future of the fight between something or someone. â€Å"From ancient grudge break to new mutiny† is another quote stemming from the prologue of Romeo and Juliet; it exemplifies how the two families are going to fight again, due to an ancient grudge (Prologue). The theme of Romeo and Juliet was introduced with haste. Love and Hate can be seen very early from the prologue. The events of the tragedy cannot yet be foreseen, but the theme is evident from the start. The first major development of the theme of Love and Hate can be observed in the very beginning, and it quickly develops into a conflict. Fighting breaks out very early among the two families, â€Å"Clubs, bills, and partisans! Strike! Beat them down! Down with the Capulets! Down with the Montagues!† (Act I, Scene I). It can be observed very early on that there is a lot of hatred between the two families. It would seem as if families are fighting for no reason, as the fight started from a scuttle between servants of the families. The fighting then stemmed and broke out into the streets and was a frenzied mash of bodies, weapons, screaming, and blood. Love is also evident early on in the story. When Romeo wants to be with Rosaline, he is turned away: â€Å"She will not be hit with Cupid’s arrow† (Act I, Scene I). Rosaline is committed to being a nun, but it is clear that Romeo is in love with her. It shows Romeo’s vulnerability and quickness to fall in love . This is part of the reason he has such a youthful love for Juliet. It can be observed that Love and Hate is a clear theme to this story. Romeo and Juliet’s love is one of the most important parts of the play, as is Tybalt’s hate. Without their twisted love and Tybalt’s unrelenting hate, the play would not unfold so tragically. â€Å"My bounty is as endless as the sea, My love is deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have for both are infinite† (Act II, Scene II). This quote expresses Juliet’s love for Romeo and shows that the two are endearing in youthful love. Here, we see that Juliet believes in never-ending love, and the more she gives, the more she receives, which makes it a self-perpetuating cycle. We may worry that this love cycle ends as soon as one of the lovers find another interest. But for now, the young couple is in love and is happy about their feelings for each other. Still, we have an uneasy feeling because Juliet mentions the sea and the depth, leading us to believe that their love is frail, like a small boat in a deep ocean. Tybalt is a significant proponent of hate throughout the story. He despises things so much, that his own hatred brings his own demise. â€Å"Now stock and honor of my kin To strike him dead I hold it not a sin† (Act I, Scene V). Tybalt, who is so angered by Romeo showing up to a party uninvited, sets out to kill Romeo. This perpetuates the existing cycle of hatred between two families. Tybalt kills Mercutio, and to avenge his death, Romeo slays Tybalt. Therefore, Romeo and Juliet’s love and Tybalt’s hate further develop the theme of the tragedy. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, the theme of love and hate proceeds throughout the play. Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other is so strong that they stand together against the whole world. At the same time, their hate for each other’s families and for the rejection that they experience is so strong that they choose death over life. We feel hopeful when Friar Lawerence comes up with the plan to keep the couple together but we are shocked by the quick unraveling of the tragedy. If only Romeo had more love for life itself, he would not sacrifice himself in the name of love for Juliet. But his hate for the world results in death and brings the rivaling families to their knees.

Recycling Recycling is an ancient practice with many modern applications. It refers to the recovery and reuse of materials from spent products. In recent years recycling has become a major part of environmental policy, mainly because of the increased costs of solid- and hazardous-waste disposal, the scarcity of natural resources, and the growing concern over polluted land, water, and air. There are two types of recycling operations: internal and external. Internal recycling is the reuse in a manufacturing process of materials that are a waste product of that process. Internal recycling is common in the metals industry. External recycling is the reclaiming of materials from a product that has been worn out or considered obsolete. An example of external recycling is the collection of old newspapers and magazines for the manufacture of newsprint or other paper products. In some areas, industries are required to pretreat wastewater before it is funneled into a waterway. In homes, wastewater is sent to a sewage-treatment plant, where it is purified, recycled, and put back into the water-supply system. Many gardeners recycle organic, biodegradable kitchen scraps by mixing them with leaves and grass clippings in a compost mound. There the organic waste decomposes and is biochemically transformed into usable soil. Successful recycling programs depend on several factors. There must be a general awareness of the problems caused by solid-waste disposal and an effective, inexpensive method for separating and collecting the recyclable materials. It also must be economically possible for industries to use and market recycled materials. In 1976 the United States Congress passed the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, encouraging states to formulate solid-waste recovery plans. Many states set up special departments to assist local communities in their recycling efforts. Some communities adopted legislation that gives consumers the option of returning containers in exchange for a small deposit paid at the time of purchase. In the United States, more than 150 million tons of solid waste are generated every year. This amounts to more than 3 pounds (1.4 kilograms) per person per day. In metropolitan areas, the daily production of solid waste is usually higher. Residents of New York City, for example, discard 26,000 tons of solid waste daily almost 7 pounds (3.2 kilograms) for each resident. Domestic recycling efforts usually involve the salvage of materials associated with disposable products packages, bottles, and labels. The cost of disposing of the solid-waste materials mainly paper, glass, aluminum, and steel has steadily increased. In many cases the land used for garbage disposal, known as landfill areas, is too valuable to use as a dumping ground. As existing landfills reach their capacity, many municipalities turn to recycling programs as a relatively inexpensive alternative to landfill disposal. Some cities also solve energy-shortage problems and the need to dispose of growing amounts of organic wastes and garbage by converting waste into energy. This is done by pyrolysis, the incineration of refuse with a deficiency of air. While pyrolysis permits recovery of certain fuel gases, chemicals, and heat energy, it can also contribute to air pollution.

Self-Awareness is the ability to read our own emotions and recognize their impact as we sometimes refer to it as â€Å"gut feelings† to make decisions. Self-Awareness also involves the accurate self-assessment – knowing our own strengths and weaknesses. We also need to have self-confidence, a measure of ourselves of what we are worth and our capabilities. One of the elements of the emotional intelligence self-awareness is the self-control as Lisa Nicole describes in her book (Divine Inspirations) and the article â€Å"Control that Temper! suggests that we need to know our limitations and learn how to self-control, through recognizing when we are about to lose our control and learn how to control our temper, we will slowly be a happier and ‘life well-lived’ person. (Nicole, 2009) Self-Control: we know we need it, but when temptations and frustrations are looming, we struggle to exert it. This week, I want to share some new perspectives with you on self-cont rol and inspire you to exercise more self-control in your life. When we think of the need for self-control, we often think of issues with anger and overindulgence. These areas certainly require attention, but lets dig deeper. Do you find yourself angry when people criticize you? Do you get defensive and then decide to seek revenge on people who may attack or wrong you? As inspired people, we have to remember that the only taste of success some people will ever have is when they take a bite out of us! Revenge weakens us because we cannot harbor resentment and negative energy and make progress at the same time. When we carry the burdens of anger and the need to control other people, we put on a 50 lb backpack that slows us down as we run the race of life. When criticized or attacked, you have 2 choices: strike back or allow your work to speak for itself and leave vindication in Gods hands. Because Gods ways are so much bigger and better than ours, we often plot schemes that are illogical and unfair, not realizing that God is just and will serve any punishment that is due. We separate ourselves from Him when we engage in combative and malicious behavior. The best revenge is a life well-lived. You may be thinking, Well that sounds nice, but some people really get on my nerves! And to that I reply, This is why self-control is necessary. Its the people and situations that irritate us the most that serve as measuring sticks of our commitment to self-control and excellence. Remember that your life is about being a builder, not a destructor. Outstanding people throughout history have faced violent opposition from jealous, envious, unwise people. Dont let a lack of self-control dissipate your energy and take your eyes off the prize. You are living an inspired life there is no time for petty disputes and time-sapping resentment. Youve got to be the amazing, self-controlled being God created you to be so that others will be blessed. Live well and prosper! Self-Management is the ability to recognize our own strength and weakness as well as how to best manage it to our advantages. The one person that served as an example of this is Bill Gates, founder of Microsoft once said â€Å"Unlike some students, I loved college. However, I felt the window of opportunity to start a software company might not open again†. It is a prime example of self-awareness and self-management that guide or facilitate reaching goals as well as the initiative of readiness to act on opportunities. Because of his self-awareness of his abilities and the opportunity, he later becomes a richest man on earth. The other competency of the Emotional Intelligence is the Social Competencies. Social Competencies include the two main components which are Social Awareness and Relationship Management which this gentleman – Jack Welch, the CEO of General Electric who has known to spend half of his time on people development. He is a CEO of one of the largest company in the orld, but he knows the names and positions of over 1,000 people in his company (Dattner, )– that is how he builds the relationship to his people. This is the only way that we can ensure that the present resources last for our next generation and beyond. Energy can be classified into two types- renewable and nonrenewable. Renewable energy includes the natural resources that are in abundant supply like the sun, the oceans and the wind from which we can get solar, water and wind power. Nonrenewable sources of energy are those like the fossil fuels the world is consuming at a hectic pace. These nonrenewable sources also power most of the world’s machinery and power plants, especially in developing nations that do not have the means to use better and cleaner fuels and technology. It is no wonder that as we run out of these non-renewable sources of energy, they are going to cost more too. The best alternative is to switch to one or other source of renewable energy as soon as possible. In this regard, each and every member of our society and our neighborhood can play an effective role in conserving and helping the environment. One thing is to be aware of the many ways in which we are wasting the available resources. The democratic system, unlike it's alternatives, encourages equality and liberty among the people which in modern society, makes it the most attractive system of government today.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Arguably, equality is the goal of many governments today. But what one must realize is that equality cannot be reached without giving someone else inequality. While democracy influences equality, communism and socialism frown upon the very idea that all people should be treated equal.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The very idea that all men are created equally is very misleading. All men are not created equally. Human beings are unequal in essence because they are unequal in most physical and psychological characteristics along with health, intelligence, and emotional balance. For most of us, living amidst inequality is common. Equality is said to be having the same rights and freedoms as everyone else. In modern society this is very true to a certain extent. The only thing equal about people is that we are all born and eventually we all die. In North America, I believe that equality among people is nearly impossible. The education is the main source of the problem. Education itself created inequality between children at an early age. Since no two persons are created equally, they will not have the same opportunities, nor will they make use of opportunities offered to all people like the education system.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  One of the most important things to a person living in North America is liberty. Ethnic groups and minorities are better represented our society than they were fifty years ago. You can no longer discriminate against someone because of there skin color which makes our world a more politically correct environment. Being democratic gives all people an equal chance to prove themselves in life. One thing I have learned about democracy is that is important to be open and not to think in the same mind set. Rules are meant to be broken. I have always thought that part of being democratic means making room for new ideals and theories that make society function better as a whole and in the end be more capable in handling problems in society.
